1/2 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/4 cups self-rising flour 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves Filling: 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 8 ounces chopped dates 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (hazel nuts or walnuts are the best) Cream together butter and brown sugar. Add egg and vanilla, mix well. In separate bowl combine flour, cinnamon and cloves. Add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Separate dough into 2 balls and wrap with saran wrap. Chill for an hour or 2. While dough is chilling, in a saucepan combine the sugar, water and dates. Cook until thick and remove from heat. Let cool some and add the nuts. Cool to room temp. Roll one of the dough balls to 1/4 inch thick in a rectangular shape. Spread half of the filling gently onto the dough and then roll it up like cinnamon rolls. Wrap with plastic wrap and chill for several hours. Repeat with the 2nd ball of dough. After dough has chilled, slice into 1/4 inch thick cookies. Place on greased cookie sheets (even better, use parchment paper if you have it). See darscookbook.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cake&action=display&thread=24 for a kick ass pan coating. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on pans for a few minutes then transfer to cooling racks.
